Brad Wright MSc - Chartered Engineer

Profile

I advise boards and owners on strategic decisions where financial, operational, regulatory and reputational consequences are material - and where the cost of poor judgement is measured in millions, not margins.

I am typically engaged when growth has outpaced governance, strategic decisions concentrate in too few people, risk accumulates unnoticed, or leadership capacity constrains growth. In these situations, activity is rarely the constraint. Judgement is.

Professional Foundation

I hold an MSc in Guided Weapon Systems Engineering from Cranfield University, where accountability for complex systems, risk and outcomes was non-negotiable.

I trained at Britannia Royal Naval College (Dartmouth) and the Joint Services Command and Staff College, and served as a Commissioned Weapons Engineer Officer in NATO operations and high-tempo environments where decisions were irreversible and consequences immediate. This included leadership of safety-critical systems and multinational teams operating under extreme pressure.

This foundation has since been applied across senior executive and board advisory roles in complex, regulated civilian organisations, where sound judgement, disciplined governance and accountability for outcomes matter regardless of sector.

Decision Authority and Scale

I have held P&L accountability for complex engineering and infrastructure operations exceeding £100M, led national and international programmes where service disruption would have affected millions of users, and governed risk in environments where regulatory breach carried criminal sanction.

My experience includes advising on the restructuring of the global defence munitions enterprise within the Ministry of Defence - a multi-year, politically sensitive transformation involving international stakeholders, regulatory complexity and material commercial risk.

I have intervened when forecasting failed, boards lacked reliable information for decisions, or governance weakened under growth - restoring the information quality and decision discipline required to regain control.

When Boards Engage Me

Boards typically engage me when:

Ownership transition or succession is approaching
Founder or key-person dependency has become a material risk
Governance has weakened under growth or complexity
Regulatory or compliance pressure has increased
A crisis or near-miss has exposed structural weaknesses
Strategic decisions carry irreversible consequences

Purpose

Technically strong organisations rarely fail through lack of effort. They fail when growth outpaces structure, decision authority concentrates, leadership becomes overloaded, and risk accumulates unnoticed.

I work with boards and owners to restore clear decision-making, strengthen governance, and build leadership systems that perform under pressure - creating enterprises that scale deliberately and transition successfully without depending on any single individual.

Methodology - The Freedom Blueprint™

The Freedom Blueprint™ is the framework I use to help boards and owners:

establish clear decision authority and reduce key-person dependency
govern risk without slowing progress
strengthen leadership capacity and succession
restore forecasting integrity and decision confidence
increase enterprise value and create exit readiness

Representative Board-Level Engagements

Olympic Park security governance and programme recovery

Provided board-level advisory and programme recovery support for the specification, assurance and procurement of £350m+ of security capital projects for the London Olympic Park. Coordinated requirements across multiple government agencies and engineering partners, restored governance coherence, and safeguarded delivery under national and ministerial scrutiny.

Enterprise governance and risk remediation ahead of a £980m defence FM re-bid

Advised senior leadership and owners on governance, operating model and commercial risk across a 99-site, safety-critical enterprise. Re-established decision authority and assurance required to secure business continuity and bid viability.

Infrastructure governance and continuity assurance for a metropolitan light railway

Held senior accountability for infrastructure integrity, supplier governance and risk oversight during a period of extreme demand leading into the London Olympics. Maintained service availability, regulatory compliance and stakeholder confidence in a highly visible public environment.

City-wide resilience and emergency governance under statutory accountability

Led governance, risk and preparedness arrangements for a unitary authority responsible for 190,000 citizens. Established emergency planning, business continuity and recovery frameworks, and chaired multi-agency coordination during live incidents and resilience exercises.

How I Work

My style is direct, disciplined and outcome-focused.

I operate as an independent strategic advisor, providing challenge, clarity and judgement to boards and owners facing decisions under constraint.
